Brothers & Alumni
Pi Kappa Phi was founded as Nu Phi (the "non-fraternity") in Charleston, South Carolina at the turn of the 20th Century. The founding fathers of PiKapp saw the fraternities on their campus taking the wonderful opportunity of brotherhood for granted.
The men of the Theta Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi are a group of motivated, passionate, and intelligent men who hope to continue the tradition of our founding fathers.
By taking advantage of opportunities presented by college life, the University of Massachusetts, and the brotherhood of Pi Kappa Phi, our mission is to challenge ourselves and our brothers to create better men for today and for the future, ultimately to give back to our community and contribute our talents and efforts to others. Matt Pearlson, #001
Chemical Engineering, 2007, Seattle, WA
Matthew served as the first President of the UMass-Associate Chapter and currently serves as the Historian on the Executive Council. Outside the fraternity, he is a graduating senior in the Department of Chemical Engineering. His research interests are in alternative fuels, and energy efficiency technologies. He has been recognized with several awards for his academic achievements including a William Field award from the University, as well as nominations for the Rhodes and Barry Goldwater scholarships. Matthew plans to move to Seattle in June and take a position with Microsoft Corporation.
Diego Torres-Palma, #002
Civil Engineering, 2007, Springfield, MA
Diego previously served as the Chapter President, Vice President and Secretary. Diego has served as a Teaching Assistant for Applied Calculus and has been a member of such organizations as UMass Golf, the American Society of Civil Engineers, Engineers Without Borders, Academic Honesty Board, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Diego was also recently nominated for the Senior Leadership Award established by the Alumni Association to recognize graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the campus.
Jake Descheneaux, #003
Political Science & Communication, 2009, Newburyport, MA
Jake serves on the Interfraternal Council as Vice President of Communications. Outside the fraternity, he is a member of the UMass Minuteman Marching Band and previously worked on the Production Crew at the Mullins Center. Jake is a First Degree Mason and a member of the AF/AM Pacific Lodge in Amherst.
Matt Sloan, #004
Biology, 2009, Beverly, MA
Matthew previously held the position of Push America Officer for the associate chapter and Community Service Chair. In his role as Push America Officer he helped to found the First Annual Eric's 5K Road Race, one of the first 5K charity races organized on the UMass Amherst campus. His other activities include working as a Student Admissions Representative and tour guide at the university, as a research assistant in the Primate Research Laboratory performing cognitive and developmental studies, as a Resident Assistant in the Orchard Hill living area, and as the UMass campus campaign manager for the Teach For America organization. Currently, Matthew serves as the Chapter Secretary.

Phil currently serves as the fraternity's Vice Archon, or Vice President. Previously, he served as our Risk Management Chair. Outside the fraternity, Phil is an AFROTC Superior Performer Field Training Graduate, Physical Training Officer, and former Operations Squadron Commander. He is a Resident Assistant and Training Mentor in Washington Tower. Phil works for UMass E.M.S and he is a Community Service Learning Supervisor and Volunteer for The Boltwood Project.

Kevin previously served on the Chapter Executive Board as Chaplian. He also works as an Apartment Living Advisor in North Residential Area. He is a volunteer in the Boltwood Project, is a member of the Commonwealth College, and is a Former President of the Residential Leadership Association (RLA). Kevin has recently begun participating in the fraternity's Academic Program which encourages all members, active and associate, to reap the benefits of Pi Kapp's extensive academic support infrastructure regardless of major or GPA.

Finance & Operations Management, 2009, Georgetown, MA
Derrick serves on the chapter's Push America Committee and has helped coordinate such events as ACCESSability and Eric's Race. He has served on the Finance and Budget Committee and plays on several of our intramural teams, including softball, baseball, volleyball, and basketball. Outside the fraternity, Derrick is a member of the Finance Society and the Investment Club and is a Resident Assistant in Grayson Hall.
Kyle Wood, #008
English, 2008, Shrewsbury, VT
Kyle served as the chapter's chartering Warden, and continues to serve on the New Member Education Committee. He is a member of Commonwealth College and a Citizen Scholar. Kyle does weekly service at the Amherst Survival Center. He is the founder of the Campus Underground Press, an alternative campus newspaper. Kyle spent last summer on the Pacific Ocean as part of a Semester At Sea program.

Michael is an active member of Pi Kappa Phi. He seeks to play a more important role before he graduates in the spring of 2008. Michael's current academic study is in Event Management and plans to pursue a double minor in Kinesiology and Communication. Michael currently works as Resident Assistant in Washington Tower and is a student of the Isenberg School of Management. His future endeavors consist of attaining his Captain's License in boating and working within the corporate field for the World Wrestling Entertainment.

Michael Czabaj graduated in May of 2006 with a dual degree in Math and Econ. Outside the fraternity, he worked for the University Housing Office as a painter, carpenter and supervisor. Mike was a community leader within the the Thatcher-Lewis-Johnson cluster as well as a Resident Assistant in Lewis. He also served as the Vice President of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). While in NRHH, Mike represented the university as well as our fraternity across the country at regional and national conferences. Mike is currently working as a systems specialist for MassMutual Financial Group in Springfield, MA.

Matthew Schoenberg has been the Chapter Secretary since January, 2006. He is responsible for composing Chapter and Executive Board minutes, e-mail list serve maintenance, administrative reports, and membership reports with national headquarters. He is also working closely with the Push America Committee to plan our spring 5k Road Race. Matt is currently involved with the Homecoming Committee to plan Homecoming activities, as well as the Finance Society and Isenberg Honors Council. On top of all that, he works two jobs, one at the Undergraduate Admissions Office, and the second at Shutesbury Elementary School with the after school program.

Nick currently serves as the Vice Pesident for Theta Mu. His responsibilities include organizing recruitment events, managing the Recruitment Committee, and planning recruitment strategy for the organization. Nick is a Resident Assistant in Cance Hall, a representative for Southwest Area Government, and a member of the Men's Crew Team.
Adam Gentile, #014
Psychology, 2009, Salem, NH
Adam serves as the fraternity's Treasurer. His responsibilities include overseeing the financial entities of the fraternity, from planning an event to collecting dues. He also oversees the Finance and Fundraising Committee. Outside the fraternity, Adam is an RA in John Adams Tower on a Psychology TAP floor. He is the Governor of Southwest Area Government and a House Council Area Government Committee Representative. Adam serves on the Coordinating Council for the SGA, is a Judicial Assistant in Coolidge Tower in Southwest, and is a member of the National Scholars Honor Society. Off campus, Adam is a certified Martial Art Instructor and trainer and Medical Assistant in a doctor's office in New Hampshire.

Chris is a former Chief Justice and former Push America Executive. Outside the fraternity, he is working on a thesis and a capstone project. His thesis is on the philosophy of just societies and his capstone project is a guide to starting a solo-practice law office. He is an Intro to Logic tutor, and has been for seven semesters. Off campus, Chris is the business manager of a law practice in Northampton. He is also the cofounder of a program to provide free legal services to indigent victims of domestic violence, where his main role is the training of undergraduate students to work as interns for attorneys participating in the program.

TJ has served as the fraternity's Publicity Chair. Along with designing and helping maintain this website, TJ is charged with supervising and approving all materials dispersed outside the fraternity. Any publication, flyer, t-shirt, or symbol you've ever seen from the Theta Mu Chapter has passed through TJ's hands. Along with handling the fraternity's publicity, TJ serves on the Recruitment Committee. Outside the fraternity, TJ works as a Campus Tour Guide and Student Admissions Representative and a web-technician for the Center for Student Business. He was a member of the UMass Drumline for four seasons and on the drumline's teaching staff for one season. TJ played on the Club Lacrosse Team and has been a Co-Manager at Sweets & More Snack Bar in Orchard Hill.

Jerome currently serves on the executive council of Theta Mu as the Historian. He was a member of the 2007 Journey of Hope team. Outside the fraternity, he is a Resident Assistant in John Quincy Adams.

Chris plans on serving as the Attendance Clerk in PiKapp. Outside the fraternity, he is a Resident Assistant in Washington Tower. Off campus, Chris works in Gerrold Meyer's neuroscience lab, studying the effects of MDMA and THC in animals.

Japanese Language & Literature, 2006, Fresh Meadows, NY
Matt graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2006, with a degree in Japanese Language and Literature. As a recipient of a Japanese Ministry of Education scholarship, Matt spent his junior year studying at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. While on campus, Matt was a member of the Thatcher-Lewis-Johnson House Council, a Community Leader, a Resident Assistant in Lewis Hall, and a peer tutor, teaching Japanese at the Learning Resource Center. Matt is the second PiKapp in his family. His brother, Joshua, is a graduate of the Alpha Tau chapter at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Joe Piedrafite, #020

Joe graduated Cum Laude in 2006 earning dual degrees in Communication and English. As an undergraduate, he was a member of the UMass Minuteman Marching Band, a columnist for the Daily Collegian, a Resident Assistant and spent two summers working with incoming freshmen through the New Students Program. In 2006, he interned at the Cannes Film Festival in France and was awarded the Michael S. Roif Award in Film Studies. Joe currently works as an Advancement Associate at Museum of Science in Boston and as a drill/music instructor for the Oakmont-Overlook High School Marching Band. He is a proud Pi Kappa Phi legacy; his father is a brother from Xi Chapter, at Roanoke College.

Mike currently serves on the Push America Committee where he aids in publicizing and organizing the fraternity's Push America-related community service events, such as AccessABILITY and the annual 5K Road Race. He has also served on the Recruitment Committee. Outside of Pi Kappa Phi, he works at TD Banknorth, is a member of the Commonwealth College, and has been a member of ULead and UMASSM. In addition to his major, Mike plans to minor in Economics and Information Technology.

Ryan currently serves as the chapter's Risk Management Chair. He is a Resident Assistant in Webster Hall. Ryan is a co-manager at Sweets & More, a student-run snack bar in Orchard Hill. He serves on the Advisory Board for the English Department and is a writing tutor at the University Writing Center. In his spare time, Ryan plays on several intramural sports teams.

Scott currently serves as the Chairman of the Brotherhood Committee. He attended the Mid-Year Leadership Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, an executive officers' training seminar offered by our National Office. Scott plays on our intramural basketball and softball teams. Outside the fraternity, he is a Cluster Office Manager for Washington Tower, as well as a Community Leader in Southwest.

Legal Studies, 2008, Canton, MA
Val served as the Outdoor Committee Chairman and as a Justice on our internal Standards Board. Outside the fraternity, he was involved with the University Judicial Hearing Board, the liaison for the American-Israeli Political Action Committee, the Vice President of the Triathlon Club, and was a member of the Men's Crew Team. Off campus, Val worked as an intern at Western Massachusetts Legal Services, an intern for Judge Carhart at Hampden Superior Court, and as an IT technician for Wizard Computer Services. Val's future plans are to pursue a career as a legal assistant or paralegal for several years and eventually attend Law School.

Jared is currently the Intramural Chair and is responsible for the chapter's involvement in several intramural sports on campus including soccer and basketball with softball, flag football and tennis doubles to come this Spring. Jared has also recently begun serving on the Push America Committee which is currently organizing the 2nd Annual Eric's 5K Road Race. Outside the fraternity, he is a member of Commonwealth College and a volunteer for the outpatient rehabilitation clinic at the Amherst site of Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Jared was also a member of the Men's Crew team.

Brian serves on the New Member Education and Push America Committees. Outside the fraternity, he works as a Personal Care Assistant and is a member of the Boltwood Project. Brian is an Officer Candidate in the United States Marine Corps and plans to study abroad in Cairo, Egypt. Given his military training, Brian is our reigning paintball champion.

Bryan currently serves as the Chairman of the Community Service Committee. He is also a member of the Recruitment, Push America, and New Member Education Committees. Outside the fraternity, Bryan is the Vice President of House Council in Washington Tower. He is also the chapter's reigning chess champion.

Originally from Sweden, Eric has lived and studied in London, England as well as San Diego, California where he was enrolled at college before transferring to UMass in the fall of 2005. Eric is currently serving as the Push America Executive and has held this position since the fall of 2006. Outside of the fraternity, Eric is the co-president of the Undergraduate Economics Club and has also written for the department's economics journal and has won the annual spring economics debate in the spring of 2006. He serves as a Resident Assistant in Lewis Hall, the international residence hall. Eric has also played on the men's intramural hockey team.

Dan is the Chief Justice of the Theta Mu Chapter. Dan has previously served on the Standards and Judicial Board and the Recruitment Committee as well as being the Publicity Chairman. He is also an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers.

Matt serves as the New Member Education Chair and is responsible for teaching potential new members about the fraternity's history and policies before they become full members. Outside the fraternity, Matt works in the Men's Hockey office and is a member of UMassm, the sport managers club. He has interned with the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Jackals minor league baseball team. Matt is currently preparing for the LSATs and plans to attend law school in New York City after graduation.

Dicky serves on the Recruitment Committee and has organized several fraternity events, such as visiting and serenading sororities. He is also involved in planning the UDance event coming in the near future. Outside the fraterity, Dicky is the President of his House Council in Washington Tower, an RLA Representative, a Community Leader, and he was voted NRHH student of the month in October.

Dave is currently the Scholarship Chair and is responsible for the implementation of a successful academic program. After graduating as valedictorian from Westfield High, he has continued his quest for academic excellence as a University Scholar and as a member of the Commonwealth College. Besides being involved in the fraternity, he has participated in the Arsenic Research project and is planning on doing research at the collegiate level this summer.

Outside of the fraternity, Rob has served as Southwest Area Government Treasurer, the John Adams Tower House Council President, and as a Judicial Assistant at the Dean of Students Office.

Olivier is currently the Special Olympics Chairman. He also serves on the Push America Committee. Outside the fraternity, he works in a lab on campus and he is part of the Amherst College sailing team. He is also a member of Commonwealth College and plans on attending medical school after graduation.

Ryan previously served on the Push America Committee. Outside the fraternity, he was a member of SHARE ("Students Helping Area Reach-Out Efforts") where he served as treasurer, the American Society of Civil Engineers, Commonwealth College, XE (Chi Epsilon), a Civil Engineering Honor Society, and is an undergraduate research assistant in the Environmental Engineering Department. Ryan also worked as a senior bartender for UMass Catering.

Theater, 2008, Middleboro, MA
Josh, or "Quack" as he's known, is in the process of writing his own historical fiction theater production through the UMass Theater Guild, and will not stop there. He plans on writing several plays throughout the semester, with the possibility of publishing at least one of them. He was recently a background extra in an upcoming movie, and is acting in a local production called Raised In Captivity in early May.

Justin has served on the Finance Committee, helping with Chapter budget and finances. Outside the fraternity, he is a member of the Residential Wellness Program, and works for Residence Hall Security. Off campus, Justin works as a graphic designer and helps other students as an English tutor.

Andrew currently serves as the Warden of the chapter and is heavily involved with the New Member Education process. In the past he has served as the Recruitment Chairman and the Beta Class President. He is a member of the Recruitment, Push America, and Ritual of Initiation Committees. He has helped fundraise and volunteer for such events like Relay For Life, Eric’s Race and Give-A-Push weekends. Outside of the fraternity Andrew is a Community Leader for North Residential Area.

David Currently serves as the Treasurer of the chapter. He has served as the Beta Class secretary and the Finance/Fundraising chairman. He has participated in and helped coordinate such events as Relay For Life and Eric's race. Outside of the fraternity, David is involved with many intramural teams on campus and formerly worked at the UMass Annual Fund. Currently David works for the Berkshire dinning Commons. Off campus, David is a camp counselor over the summer and also works at American Eagle Outfitters.
Karthik Sugumaran, #046
Pre-Med, 2010, Lexington, MA
Karthik is a member of Commonwealth College. He currently serves as House Council President of Brett/Brooks cluster, co-secretary the UMass Jiu-jitsu Club, and is a member of the UMass Shotokan Club. Karthik is a musician. He has been playing the Indian string instrument, the Veena, for the past twelve years and has delivered numerous public performances. Karthik aspires is to become a doctor and open his own practice.

Chris is an enthusiastic member of PiKapp's intramural teams, including flag football, basketball, and softball. He currently serves as the 2008 UDance Co-Chair, planning the Greek Life event that will take place this fall. Chris serves on the Push America and Rituals Committees, and he coordinates the PiKapp/Smith College Date Auction, which takes place each spring. Chris spends his summers refereeing youth basketball and working for a contractor in his hometown.

Brian is a member of Commonwealth College & the Isenberg Honors Council, and is a Community Leader in Cance Hall in Southwest. He works for the Danvers Department of Public Works in the summer as a member of the Building Maintenance Department, mostly painting schools. Brian plans to become involved in the Inter-fraternal Council and help coordinate some fund-raising events for Push America including a possible Golf Tournament.

Joseph serves as the New Member Education Committee chairman. He is a member of the Push America Committee, and the Push Club, an RSO started to expand the vision and reach of Push America, Pi Kappa Phi's national philanthopy. Joe is a Community Leader, a Minutemover, and has recently applied to the National Resident Hall Society for an honorary membership.

Adam is currently enrolled in the College of Engineering, but would ultimately like to pursue a career in architecture and design his own house. In the future, he plans like to get involved with publicity for the fraternity, and possibly run for the Chaplain position. Outside of the fraternity, Adam is a member of an intramural soccer team, but also enjoys frisbee and running. When school is not in session, Adam works at a summer camp and a local supermarket.

Kegan currently serves on the Community Service Committee. Outside of the fraternity, he is an RA in Orchard Hill and is a member of the National Arbor Day Foundation, Audubon Society, and New England Bonsai Association. Kegan is also involved with several intramural sports.

Matthew currently serves as the Chaplain on the Executive Council. He has previously held both the Housing and Finance/Fundraising Committee Chairman positions. He has volunteered to build ramps for individuals with disabilities, raised money for U-Dance, Eric’s Race, the Special Olympics and Pi Kappa Phi Theta Mu. He is also involved in the Ritual Committee and Finance/Fundraising Committee. He plans to lend a helping hand to all other committees as well. Outside of the fraternity, Matt works for UMASS at the Berkshire DC and is a Finance & Operations Management and Sport Management Major. He is also in the Commonwealth College.

Kurt Jalbert transferred to UMass from Berkshire Community College as a member of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society. He performs vocal percussion for the UMass Dynamics, and is a member of Commonwealth College. Kurt is currently a member of the Finance Committee in his hometown. Upon graduation, he plans to either attend law school or pursue an MBA.

Joseph plans to become a member of the Recruitment Committee. Outside the fraternity, Joseph is a member of the UMass Drumline and hopes to pursue a career in mathematical finance. At home, Joe gives private drum lessons, and co-operates a landscaping business during the summer.

Andrew serves as the Gamma Class President. Outside the fraternity, his commitment to service remains obvious. Andrew has been a public representative for MDA and the Easter Seals Foundation.
Rusty Brown, #056
English & Philosophy, 2009, Methuen, MA
Rusty serves as the Gamma Class Vice President. In the future, he plans to become a member of the Recruitment Committee. Outside the fraternity, Rusty works as a supervisor at AMC Theaters, as well as holding an on-campus job in the Controller's Office in Goodell Hall. Rusty is a member of the UMass Drumline, where he performs in the front ensemble.

Elie is a writer and a musician. He writes poetry and has performed in several percussion ensembles at the local and state levels. Elie is also learning to play the guitar. Also a sailor, he served as captain of his high school sailing team. Here at UMass, Elie is a Community Leader and Floor Representative in the Brett/Brooks Cluster.

Biology (Pre-Med), 2011, Henderson, NV
Mike is extremely active during the year. He is currently an RA in John Adams tower, Secretary of the fraternity, and a volunteer at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. He is able to balance all this with the stress of a science major. Also, he is currently seeking a job as an EMT after his recent certification. When Mike isn't busy, he likes hanging around with friends and working on his computer.

Jason has worked for the Hillel House on campus, raising money for the Hillel program. He also works at a Jewish summer camp in Rhode Island.
Mike Keough, #060
Music Education & Trumpet Performance, 2009, Weymouth, MA
Mike is active in many musical ensembles here at UMass. He has served as Principal Trumpet for the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band, Lead Trumpet in Jazz Ensemble 1, and most recently as the Student Director of the UMass Marching Band. He works on campus as a Student Admissions Representative and Tour Guide, and freelances off campus as trumpet player. Mike will be spending the spring of 2008 abroad in England, and hopes to intern with the London Symphony Orchestra. In the Fraternity, he hopes to take an active role on the Push America Committee.

Matt is a Resident Assistant in Sylvan. He commits his academics to awareness and activism and is receiving practicum credit as a Massachusetts State-Certified Rape Crisis Counselor at the Everywoman's Center. Matt previously attended Boston University and the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he participated in a student-run organization for transgendered people and their allies. His aspirations change day-to-day, but he always succeeds at what he does.

Jon transferred to UMass Amherst after one year at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA to pursue a major in Chemistry. In high school, Jon was a member and captain of his school's track team, as well as a captain, MVP, Coaches Award recipient, and All-League Sportsmanship Award recipient of the cross-country team. Here at UMass, Jon is working diligently to achieve academic excellence, and will soon try out for the UMass Men's Soccer team.

James is a House Council Floor Representative in the Patterson/MacKimmie Cluster. An aspiring writer, he has been published the Independant, a national public newspaper in England. James has also written, produced, and directed several films and is currently writing a stage production. In the Fraternity, he hopes to serve as PiKapp's Community Service Chair or to work with the Treasurer on International fund-raising.

Sameer aspires to attend Medical School and ultimately become a doctor. Here at UMass, he works in a campus lab and interns at Cooley-Dickinson Hospital. Sameer says that he is driven by the phrase, "Hard work is always followed by rewards."

Chris graduated from Millbury High School, ranking 13th in his class. Here at UMass, he is an EMT and serves as Director of Operations for UMass EMS. Chris is a Resident Assistant in the Grayson/Field Cluster, a Research Assistant in a Biomechanics Lab, a Teaching Assistant for two courses, and plays on several intramural sports teams.

Nick Panzarino graduated as an honors student from Shrewsbury High School in 2006. While in high school, he was inducted to the National Honors Society, served as President of the Latin Club, and competed on several athletics teams. Nick was a four-year member of the Baseball, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track teams. During his last two years of high school, Nick worked at a Physical Therapy clinic near his home. On campus, Nick is a member of the Bio-Tap program.

Greg served as the Delta Class President. He plans to become involved with the Recruitment Committee in the upcoming semesters and hopes to serve as the Finance Committee Chairman. Greg also plays on the PiKapp intramural softball team, and plans to play intramural soccer in the Fall. Off campus, he works at a summer camp and plans to start his own ecommerce business.

Mike served as the Delta Class Vice President. He is actively involved with Recruitment, Greek Week, and Push America. Mike plans to become involved with Pi Kappa Phi's Academic Program and Push America. Outside of PiKapp, he is a member of the Freshman National Honor Society and the UMass Drumline. Off campus, Mike participates in numerous community service projects with St. Elizabeth's Parish of Acton, MA. In the past, he has been involved with the Young Neighbors in Action Program in places such as Alabama and St. Thomas Islands. This summer Mike plans to make his second trip to Honduras and help with the Olancho Aid Foundation.

Billy plans to serve as the Publicity Chairman in the upcoming semesters, as well as being involved with Recruitment and New Member Education. Outside Pi Kappa Phi, Billy is a member of the Psychology TAP program and serves as an ambassador for incoming freshman. He plans to use his experience here to eventually become a Clinical Psychologist. Billy is active on campus, playing trumpet in the UMass Marching Band and Hoop Band.

Patrick is an active member in Pi Kappa Phi and the UMass community. Since his introduction to the fraternity, he has shared an unofficial title of "resident chef," along with his big brother Scott Lee, offering classes such as "Pi Kapp Cooking 101" to his fellow brothers. Patrick is currently running for the New Member Education Chairman position and eventually hopes to serve as Warden. He plans to use his passion for cooking, and love of business, to open his own catering company after graduating.
